OustOust is a small, peaceful village in the Couserans region of the Ariège Pyrenees, situated at the confluence of the Garbet and Salat rivers. It's the ideal point of departure for exploring the many tourist sites in the Couserans and Ariège as well as the nearby mountains: Mont Valier (2,838 m), Pic Rouge de Bassiès, Cascade d'Ars, Etang du Garbet, Cirque de Cagateille, etc...

The Mirabat chateau (about a 4 hour hike) which overlooks the valleys of Oust and Seix is considered by some specialists to be the oldest and highest chateau in Ariège.

The Romans appreciated the plain of Oust ("Augusta")--several place names (Vic, Anilac...) testify to their presence.

Vic d'OustIn the Middle Ages, Vic d'Oust and its church were an important point of passage on the route of St James of Compostella (St Lizier, Vic d'Oust, Salau, Port de Salau).

Every 8th of September there is a procession to the Pouech chapel, above the village, to give thanks to the Virgin Mary, a ritual dating back to 1854 when the village was spared from the ravages of a cholera epidemic.

Later in the 19th century, Oust was the scene of intense artisanal and industrial activity: 2 catalan forges, bocard?..., grain mills, sharpening stone production and several cheese dairies. Camembert d'Oust was at that time a veritable gastronomic reference.

The principal economic activities of Oust today are agriculture and tourism.
